‘Black Widow’ Film To Be Helmed By ‘Lore’ Director Cate Shortland

Iron Man 2 (2010)

Before the red was in her ledger…

After considering over 70(!) directors, Marvel Studios has chosen Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland for the standalone flick. Shortland is possibly best known for her WWII drama, Lore (please sound off in the comments if you have seen this).

The standalone film will see Scarlett Johansson reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, and is rumored to be set before the events of the first Avengers film. The latest draft of the script was written by Jac Schaeffer (TiMER).

Many have been clamoring for a Black Widow solo film, and it was somewhat ridiculous how Marvel’s Kevin Feige and co. dodged the possibility over the years. But with the success of films like Wonder Woman, (and Disney’s ability to sell anything with the Marvel logo) this is a no-brainer.

While I personally don’t have a huge desire for this standalone, I won’t argue against more spy films. If this produces a legit espionage thriller without any sky beams, I’m all for it. Granted, I expect plenty of cameos and the character demystification that turns me off from prequels, but I also predict a more grounded picture. I’ve had my fill of exploding cities and CG armies.

“How are we still alive?”

Are you excited for the Black Widow film? Will we see what happened in Budapest? Will there be more Hawkeye than Infinity War? And most importantly, what will her hair look like? You know what to do.
