Cathy Yan has just been hired to direct an upcoming DC Extended Universe film starring Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn. Now, the question is: What sort of film is this exactly?
Deadline describes it as being “based on Birds of Prey, which in the DC universe teams Quinn with several other crime fighters, namely Black Canary, Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) and Huntress.” Although, to my knowledge, Harley Quinn has never been a member of the Birds of Prey, but she has been their villain in the past. Other sources have thrown out the possibility that DC Films decided to mash Birds of Prey and Gotham City Sirens together into one film, and with Christina Hodson being confirmed to have written the script for this movie, more signs point to it being Birds of Prey, but with Harley Quinn having a lead role.
The film is expected to start shooting at the end of 2018 once Robbie finishes Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (assuming she finalizes a deal to star). Apparently, DC Films chose Birds of Prey w/ Harley Quinn over David O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2 (which will also feature Harley Quinn in a large capacity) as being the next DCEU film to go down the pipeline. Is it to early to say that Batman’s glorious days as being DC’s movie child is over in favor of pushing Harley Quinn into the spotlight?
Yan had a successful career at the Wall Street Journal before she moved into directing. Her first feature Dead Pigs earned her some good word of mouth it seems as taking a page from Hollywood Blockbuster 101, this indie director is now signed to direct a $100M+ blockbuster. Fingers crossed she does good.
What are your thoughts on Yan directing some version of a film I will for now call Birds of Prey Meets Gotham City Sirens w/ Harley Quinn? Let us know in the comments below.
