Character Designs from ‘Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’

Nickelodeon has released images from their upcoming animated series, which will debut later this year. The 2-D series is the follow-up to the popular CG show that premiered in 2012.

Leonardo: Nice Tyson tat

Michelangelo: Alright, this fits

Donatello: Written by Tom Clancy

Raphael: Bro, do you even lift?

Splinter: Victor Wong in a rat costume

April: (insert fan-outrage)

The Turtles’ hold distinct personality traits and skills, including: Raphael, as the oldest and biggest brother, he is the leader full of enthusiasm and bravado; Leonardo, the self-professed ‘coolest’ brother possesses irreverent charm and a rebel heart; Donatello, a mechanical genius and tech wizard whose ninja skills are second only to his coding; and Michelangelo, the youngest brother, a skateboarder and artist who is wild and imaginative.

My knee-jerk reaction to this is… Ew. I don’t like the character designs, weapon changes, and I especially don’t like making Raphael the leader. The animation will also probably be cheaper (as will the gags), similar to series like Teen Titans Go. However, making each brother a different species of turtle is an interesting idea. And I’m fine with April. Plus she was “racially ambiguous” in the comics, so there’s that.

But most importantly, this is for kids, so my opinion is moot. Plus the original cartoon hasn’t aged well at all, so I don’t have a green leg to stand on.

What do you think of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Will your kids be watching this? Can’t be any worse than The Next Mutation, right?

Lol, you figured right. Was a great contrast though!

  • King Alvarez

That’s how I got to where I am today! 😛

  • LOL

  • Peacesquad

    Lol!!!

  • I know nothing about this season(?), but I love this comment.

  • Peacesquad

    LMao Teenage Fugly Mutant Fugtles🤣😂🤣😂😂😂🤣😂

  • An intern from Cow and Chicken?

  • I’d read it fo sho.

  • ResonanceCascade

Hmm, you’re not even half way. I think that’s like mid-40s and the Japanese run is in the 120s. That is the best arc though.

  • Totally. WHO DREW THAT?

  • Cap_N_Jack

They really did. There was also an episode that involved a back-alley doctor separating siamese twins who went on to become two of the shows main villains which was apparently just far enough over the line for a kids show that they had to scrap it. I should write an article on all this, I was sort of an obsessive for a time.

  • Sounds like they jumped the Armaggon.

  • Hold my beer while I go to H&R Block.

  • Cap_N_Jack

As far as I know, the production staff wanted to push Fast Forward (which was also awful) and just went ahead and aired it without leaving room for Tribunal (which is odd since the last episode of season four is a cliffhanger).

  • Cap_N_Jack

Huh, that would make sense. I knew I was doing something wrong. All my tax documents are stored in a file marked ‘Filthy, filthy porn”

  • Interesting. Any idea why it didn’t air?

  • I’m definitely going to binge. Thanks, brother.

  • Cap_N_Jack

Nah, there was actually a season that never aired set between season four and Fast Forward called TMNT: Ninja Tribunal. They released it as a dvd set which I bought. It was awful but it went out of print almost immediately so a few years ago I sold it for about sixty dollars profit.

  • Is the folder labeled “Tax Stuff”?

  • Cap_N_Jack

Your ideas intrigue me and I’d like to subscribe to your newsletter.

  • TheGreenMalice

Brother, you are so wrong… In my personal stash I have some videos of these characters shooting colored goo, that will change your world.

  • Was that the “Fast Forward” season?

  • Cap_N_Jack

Yep, they went that direction in the fifth season of the cartoon I liked and it ruined it.

  • Not crazy about them all appearing to have mystical powers. The stakes drop when they can all shoot colored goo.

But again, I need to stop thinking this show is for me.

  • Cap_N_Jack

You know, April being black is fine. Doesn’t change the character in any meaningful way and allows them to have a non-villainous black main character. What is not fine is her being a pigtailed tween with a magic baseball bat.

  • Haha, I figured the Injustice post might make up for the new cartoon.

  • Cap_N_Jack

Nah, I really hate these designs but I hated the ones from the last iteration too so I saw no need in saying it again. And yeah, if you like superhero cartoon, this iteration of TMNT is something of a gem.

  • You scared me there for a second. I saw this comment in recent comments and thought you were talking about the character designs.

This is great, I’ve never seen it and now I need to binge.

  • Tanis11

Aaaaaaand here is the example of a shitty TMNT.

  • Cap_N_Jack

If anyone’s curious, I am of the mind that this is the single best thing the turtles franchise has ever produced: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVr_w3y-bQc

  • TheGreenMalice

That sucks. How far off are the dubbed funimation episodes from the subbed episodes. This weeks episode was where Goku Black shows up on earth earth.

  • ResonanceCascade

The animation in the early seasons was pretty iffy at times (although Z had a lot of shitty animation too) but still a lot better than some of the Newgrounds-tier stuff I see on TV these days.

But lately, the animation has been a lot better, and sometimes it’s straight up spectacular: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwvxNP1qtEs

It is canceled, sadly. But there is going to be at least one more movie released late this year or early next year.

  • Dino Thunder was amazing!

  • TheGreenMalice

I am a pleb, I only watch the dubbed versions… I quite enjoy it, but even the animation on it, is softer than it was with Dragon Ball Z. Is the show cancelled?

  • Cap_N_Jack

The interesting thing is I love the TMNT but pretty much none of the popular iterations. It started out as a parody of Frank Miller’s Daredevil and grew into this bizarre, sometimes gritty, sometimes creative comic. Then it got a series of mediocre 1990s films and an even more mediocre cartoon. But in 2003 they made a darker cartoon that reads like a legitimate Daredevil tv show and a pretty decent 2007 animated film.

  • ResonanceCascade

I thought about using TMNT as an example, but some TMNT media has been pretty good (apparently). But yeah, that original cartoon was pretty much just a toy commercial. Definitely does not hold up.

  • Cap_N_Jack

Yeah, honestly the original TMNT cartoon wasn’t super great, but I like the one from when I was 13 a ton so I can’t judge.

  • ResonanceCascade

And some things were actually bad when we were kids and continue to be bad now. Like Power Rangers.

  • ResonanceCascade

Nope, I watch it subbed every week on the Funimation app. They do simulcasts now. The show is coming to an end next month, though.

  • Cap_N_Jack

Some things are just worse too. Die Hard movies for example.

  • Cap_N_Jack

Give it a little time to get going, but it’s good.

  • Welp, I’ll be busy.

  • TheGreenMalice

I am at a point where I just assume the things I loved growing up, are no longer mine to love in their new iterations.

  • Cap_N_Jack

It’s all on youtube though…in pretty decent resolution. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AL4JftCKR8c&list=PLJOXtFyZkYoeQSXGSDHqhuX4Q2P777dl1

  • TheGreenMalice

    Splinter is the real offense.

  • TheGreenMalice

My guess is lack of talent. The rise of digital has made it more accessible to people with less talent or a lack of the skill set that used to go into the art.

  • Cap_N_Jack

Indeed. Nickelodeon hates it for some reason. I happen to own all those crappy several-episode volumes so I have it backed up, but it’s a shame it’s not in print. For four seasons, it was the best non Bruce Timm superhero cartoon ever.

  • TheGreenMalice

Hasn’t Dragon Ball Super been in the can for years though? I thought we were just getting what had already been released.

  • Raiden

How else are they going to get a Y7 rating?

  • I wish they would make that series easy to stream. I missed it during its original airing. As far as I know, the only official releases are crappy several-episode volumes on DVD.

  • Cap_N_Jack

I miss the 2003 cartoon. Bladed weapons and the willingness to kill villains was nice.

  • Raiden

Ralphs design is clearly inspired by the Michael bay Ninja Turtles.

  • So they’ve taken Mikey’s nunchakus again, and taken Raph’s sais. And April apparently has a Green Lantern ring. Pass .

  • I remember Cinemassacre trying some of the recipes. Most were gross, but I think they actually liked some of the weird toppings.

  • Joe Newman
  • ResonanceCascade

    Uncle Phil!

  • Don’t get me wrong, I still love it in general, but I tried to rewatch the entire series… I gave up quickly.

    So. Many. Puns.

  • Joe Newman

    The original cartoon aged perfectly.

  • Yea she is… wait

  • There was some real artistry put into hand-drawn series. A lot of the 90s shows from WB and Disney are gorgeous. Now it feels like they’re just cranking out templates for kids to binge and buy toys.

  • ResonanceCascade

It’s a damn shame. I’ve been watching Batman the Animated Series again, and it’s staggering how much better it looks than modern kids cartoons.

And even something like Dragon Ball Super, which comes out every week, looks way better than these seasonal Western shows, even at its worst. It’s crazy.

  • Also just want to point out that April is riding Donatello in the header image… 0_0

  • I don’t know enough about animation to adequately answer your first question, but I think it’s a few factors: The new technology has them finding new ways to cut corners, more animation is being done in-house with smaller teams, so they want to streamline it, and they realize that kids don’t care how cheap their cartoons look.

DBMI is looking into the second issue.

  • ResonanceCascade

Serious question to people who know more about animation: how come computers have made the animation workflow way more affordable, but animated shows in general just keep looking worse and worse? This looks like an Esurance commercial.

Also, not sure where to toss this, but the home page won’t load for me in Firefox (tried on 2 computers). All other pages work, as do the other browsers I tried.

  • No.

Don’t mind April but Splinter is crappy, along with the other designs.

  • Just in comments but deserved it’s own article. Thank you for this : )

  • Sailor Monsoon

Michelangelo is the only half decent one

  • Sailor Monsoon

Not as an article but duke posted a link to them back in the weekend thread

  • Wait was this posted already?

  • Jeez, these look like they came out a disturbing fever dream

  • Sailor Monsoon

I already done gave this a hell no dawg
