Denis Villeneuve Bows Out of ‘James Bond’ Running Because ‘DUNE’, Duh

Hot off the heels of bringing us an honest-to-god good sequel to Blade Runner (sad-face box office numbers notwithstanding), director Denis Villeneuve is a pretty hot property at the moment, but the man has priorities of where to take his talents next.

According to The Playlist, that won’t be a James Bond sequel however.

Despite endorsement from Bond star Daniel Craig, Villeneuve had this to say:

Daniel Craig is a very inspiring actor and I had some contact and the thing is that I’m busy right now doing Dune. But, I will say to have the privilege to work with him it would be a dream. I would love to work with Daniel and a Bond movie for me would be a treat. It’s a matter of timing, I guess.

Villeneuve is a potential Best Director nominee for his incredible work on Blade Runner 2049 and it will be very interesting to see him tackle another high-concept and difficult to translate science fiction piece like Dune to the big screen.

What say ye, Exiles; would you have preferred to see Villeneuve try his hand at a big budget spy thriller or continue to build his name around complicated science fiction stories?

Same. A View to a Kill is the only one I have ever watched fully. Great song by Duran Duran.

Good. Fuck James Bond. Boring ass pansy.

Read the novel first. The first movie was cheesy 80s goodness but left a lot to be desired. There was a Sci fi channel remake that didn’t have the budget needed. Villeneuve and the budget for this is a sci fi lovers wet dream.

Probably worth a watch. Some like it, some don’t, but I don’t think anyone can deny that it’s not unique.

    I’ve never seen Dune…

    …that is all.

I don’t even love Dune that much, but I love his dedication to more interesting projects than Bond so I applaud this.

I’m sure he’d make a good Bond film, but I prefer him on Dune.

Bond is one of those franchises I just don’t care about. Yeah, I’ve watched a few of the movies, but they were never what I would call “top tier,” even within what I would call the “spy genre.” Nothing about it ever grabbed me.

  • Nope, don’t waste him on Bond, that franchise doesn’t particularly need such a directorial vision.

  • It’s not like there’s a narrow window on the Bond franchise. For both Villeneuve and Nolan, I say let them do a Bond movie whenever they can fit one into their schedule. I’d like to see either vision happen.

That said, I’m more interested in seeing Dune and whatever other projects Nolan has cooking.

  • Do Bond. Dune will continue in development hell for another five to ten years.

I want him to direct a bond film badly but if he’s still some how attached to Dune, no complaints from me
