Rampage is not the first time Dwayne Johnson has starred in a video game adaptation. His first was actually back in 2005 with Doom. That film is part of the video game movie ‘curse,’ which Johnson admits to Total Film (via GamesRadar) he knows all about:
“I lived the video game curse because I made Doom. And Doom was a movie based off a very popular video game and was incredibly unsuccessful. So I lived the curse, and I experienced it.”
However, at least one good thing came out of this failure, as he approached Rampage wanting to inject humor into the movie; something he felt was lacking in Doom:
“Also making sure that there was a winking charm and humor in Rampage that, for me personally, was not in Doom.”
Jumping from video game adaptation to superhero comic adaptations, in an interview with Yahoo Movies, Johnson mentioned Warner Bros.’ production plans for DC Films’ Black Adam solo flick. He said:
“The script came in, it’s great, we’re working on it. If things come together in the way we anticipate them coming together, that feels like a 2019 movie, in production.”
“Marvel is doing such an incredible job of universe building and building out … and DC is doing a great job finding the footing and tone of their movies, certainly with like Wonder Woman, for example. I look forward to James Wan’s movie that’s coming out, with Aquaman. So, Black Adam is this phenomenal opportunity for us to nail the tone, make sure that he’s badass, make sure that we’re serving the mythology properly, but then, also make sure that we can have intrinsic DNA tied to a lot of other properties in DC. So, it’s not an easy thing to do, but I think we’re going to nail it.”
Dwayne Johnson has enough charisma for everyone, and frankly, the DCEU is suffering the same villain problems as the MCU. If they can make Black Adam sort of DC’s Loki, then I will be happy.
Rampage hits theaters this Friday, April 13, 2018. Black Adam is aiming for a 2019 start date.
