Casting has begun for Marvel’s long-awaited solo Black Widow film. Choices are being whittled down for numerous roles, the most prominent of which is a second lead described as a “kick ass female Bond.” An actress who “feels similar” to star Scarlet Johansson is wanted for the physically demanding role. Several actresses are currently under consideration, though none have been formally offered the part. Emma Watson (the Harry Potter series, Beauty and the Beast) seems to be the front runner. Other actresses have auditioned, including Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures), Dar Zuzovsky (Papa), and Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family). Again, no decisions have been made at this point.
Marvel hasn’t released any concrete details about the plot, but it’s expected to take place before the events of Iron Man 2. Speculation has been made that the film will follow Black Widow’s time with Russian intelligence prior to her defection to SHIELD. Other rumors have stated that appearances could be made by the Avenger Hawkeye or Captain America’s pal the Winter Solider.
Cate Shortland (Lore, Berlin Syndrome) has been tapped to direct, with production expected to begin in early summer. No release date has yet been nailed down.
