FanCast: The Ultimate Superhero Movie

Superhero films are a dime a dozen. In fact, Superhero stories are in such high demand, We now have three X-Men TV shows in the works.

But that wasn’t always the case.

There was a time when high profile directors couldn’t get their movies off the ground.

  • J.J Abrams has a failed Superman film
  • Tim Burton has a failed Superman film
  • George Miller had a failed Justice League movie
  • James Cameron has a failed Spider-Man movie
  • Nicolas Winding Refn tried to do Wonder Woman
  • So did Joss Whedon
  • Darren Aronofsky Tried to do Batman
  • The Wachowski’s Had Batman and Plastic Man scripts
  • Tom Cruise was attached to Iron Man for almost a decade

And on and on. Which lead me to the question: “Which version would you have wanted to see or better yet, Which hypothetical version would you make?”

Any director, Any decade, Any actors.

I would go with X-Men in the 80’s Directed By John Carpenter.

My Cast:

Wolverine–Clint Eastwood

Cyclops–Kurt Russell

Jean Grey–Karen Allen

Colossus–Arnold Shwarzenegger

Captain America–Clint Walker

Magneto–Rod Steiger

Silver Samurai–Toshiro Mifune

Bullseye–Lee Marvin

Mystique–David Bowie

I would make Wolverine and Captain America brothers, Make Bullseye a mutant and remove Charles Xavier completely or have him be dead at the beginning. Mix it up and go crazy.

So, What is your dream team? Maybe a 90’s Justice league with Brad Pitt? Or a 80’s Avengers with Chuck Norris?

Comment below and let me know

  • Duke

    TRUTH

  • Indianamcclain

There’s only one Marty McFly the rest are imitators.

  • Duke

Tune in tomorrow morning for my article on this haha. I’ll wait until I see the movie before I say ‘Yup, Spider McFly’, but Tom Holland seems like a cool down to earth guy, so if he’s going to be this generation’s Marty McFly, I’m cool with it.

  • Indianamcclain

Now that he’s come out and admitted this I can definitely see a hint of Marty in his performance.

  • Duke

Do not be surprised if I write an article on this which is mostly me being super happy and excited about this.

  • Indianamcclain
  • Jean Morel

    Oh I’ll see them someday.

  • Jean Morel

    Pretty much, sadly.

  • sailor monsoon

    Some are fantastic.
Under the red hood has my second favorite joker

  • Duke

WW is already certified fresh on rt with a 96%. That number will fall a bit, but it looks like the DCEU finally has a winner and a film to take reference from for future films.

  • Jean Morel

I have yet to see any of these DC animated movies.

  • sailor monsoon

Cranston did play him in Batman year One and he was the best part about it

  • Jean Morel

Wonder Woman looks like it may actually be good. But even if it’s a sign of things to come, it would be a shame as the universe is built on moldy foundations.

  • Jean Morel

Thanks man, I’m pretty proud of it. It was sometimes a bit challenging to make sure everyone had the proper ages (ex. once I chose Lohan as Batgirl, I had to find a male actor roughly the same age for Robin) and I could just have kept on going with more characters but I had to stop somewhere lol. The good thing with this cast is that for many of the actors, it could still work today.

  • Jean Morel

I have good news. There is no way this is terrible. 😉

  • Jean Morel

Cage can totally play the straight man but his capacity to just switch from grounded to insanity would make for an incredible Joker. And Cranston just looks exactly like the character to me.

  • Jean Morel

I knew you’d like seeing pre-troubles Lindsay Lohan there.

  • Jean Morel

Thanks. I wanted to have Falcone & Maroni played by Italian American actors but not be so on the nose as to stunt cast Godfather alums.

And yeah, Cage would do an amazing Joker.

  • Duke

Agreed. I can’t think of any older actors except for Principal Strickland from BTTF lol. And the Breakfast Club principal but I think that was Paul Gleason right?

We need to all collaborate and hash out a proper 80’s MCU cast and timeline one day haha.

  • sailor monsoon

    Agreed

  • Adam Kieswetter

Clint as Logan and Schwarzenegger as Colassus!! Hilarious!! (But Awesome)

  • DryButSoupy

    That guy is freaking huge.

  • DryButSoupy

    Wow. That IS badass.

  • sailor monsoon

    He’s a underrated badass.
He went skiing and was impaled in the chest by a branch (the same injury that killed sonny bono) and he walked to the hospital.
He and sutherland are the only two left

  • sailor monsoon

I love the casting but i would rearrange certain ones.
Cranston is perfect as Gordon but after seeing world trade center, i think cage would’ve made a great Gordon.
So what if cage as Gordon BECOMES the joker?
It’s a crazy idea that the mid 2000’s would have

  • Jooshua

I chose Harry Dean Stanton as Uncle Ben. Angela Lansbury or Shirley MacLaine as Aunt May. Demi Moore as Felicia Hardy. Bob Hoskins as Doc Ock. Kurt Russell as Sandman. David Bowie as Chameleon.

I also chose Molly Ringwald for MJ. She would’ve been perfect back then.

John Cusack would’ve been a pretty cool Matt Murdock. Lea Thompson is such a great choice for Pepper Potts!

No idea who Robin Williams could play. Mysterio?

My main issue is I can’t remember any actors who were older in the 80s. I keep coming up with Brat Packers, and anybody from John Hughes movies.

Stan Lee is the man. But I still say Paul Gleason would’ve killed it as JJJ.

  • DryButSoupy

Dirty Dozen was on yesterday and I watched some of that very movie. I think that’s why I had him on the brain. And also it’s probably why I chose an Invaders flick to riff on…the WW2 commando genre.

  • To Be Continued

JJ Abrams’ Superman should’ve started the DCEU. I think his ability to resurrect franchises, plus his eye for action and emotional arcs, could’ve worked to establish the tone they are so desperately trying to balance (Wonder Woman looks like it might be it!).

  • Joshua Martyniouk

All of Marvels Actors with the DCEU actors to make a 2 part Marvel VS DC movie!

  • Duke

Yes to Lohan as Batgirl and Cranston as Gordon. Cage as Joker is a great pic.

  • Lydia Deetz
  • Joe Newman

I’d watch the shit out of this even if it was terrible.

  • Jean Morel

Well yes, they’re my picks. How do you like the casting?

PS: It took me way too long to look for the pics and make the collage.

  • Duke

    Did you make that pic?

  • *blank stare*

Cage as Joker. Why oh why didn’t I ever see that before.

I also love the Travolta/Stallone casting.

  • Jean Morel

I hope I didn’t arrive after the party. Here are my picks for a mid-2000s Batman movie. Directed by…I don’t know, Francis Lawrence? (much bigger pic if clicked)
    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/7689609a2fb727ab00fd3fc0c370b8b09e40f306ff46439902f32fb556b9079c.jpg

  • Duke

    • John Cusack as Daredevil. • Molly Ringwald as Mary Jane Watson.
    • Michael Gross as Howard Stark
    • Matthew Brodrick as ?
    • ? as Uncle Ben
    • Michelle Pfieffer as Black Cat (problem solved)
    • Robin Williams as ?
    • Thomas F. Wilson as Baron Mordo
    • Lea Thompson as Pepper Potts (Howard the Duck movie is canon, but we change her name to Pepper Potts, who’s radically different than the comics; still has relationship with Swayze’s Stark though).
    • Stan Lee as J. Jonah Jameson (he wanted to play the character if he could have when he was younger. An 80’s MCU gives him this chance)

  • Joe Newman

Just a random thought but Tom Cruise would have actually made a great Cyclops in a 90s X-Men film.

  • Jooshua

Exactly. I’m sure Gunn will find a way.

  • Jooshua

You are thinking BIG. I just basically took the Brat Pack and threw them all in a Spider-Man movie. But this is good stuff. I think my Paul Gleason casting of J. Jonah Jameson is spot on though. Emilio Estevez would make a pretty bad-ass Hawkeye. I thought of Michael Douglas as Norman Osborn, it didn’t even register that of course he could still be Hank Pym!! I don’t know about Michelle Pfeiffer though. I don’t want to imagine a world where she wouldn’t be able to play Catwoman because she’s already in a Marvel movie. Patrick Swayze is good, I’m just desperate to think of John Cusack in any of these superhero movies, whether it’s the hypothetical past or the very real future lol.

  • sailor monsoon

I could see him being a crazy alien type like Benicio del Toro or jeff goldblum

  • Jooshua

He’d make a great Blue Beetle as well. He’d be a cool Beta Ray Bill, but I’d love to see him in a role where we can actually see his real face lol.

  • Duke

Patrick Swayze would make a kickass Tony Stark imo. Then have Val Kilmer play Iceman. Elizabeth Shue could have been Gwen Stacey. Michael Douglas could have still been Hank Pym. Michelle Pfieffer as Janet Van Dyme. Emilio Estevez as Hawkeye because why not. Ally Sheedy as Kitty Pride.

  • sailor monsoon

It’s funny you mention booster gold because i always pictured him as blue beetle.
    Maybe beta ray bill?

  • Jooshua

I don’t know as who though. Because I always imagine him as Booster Gold, but I feel like he’d fit the MCU so much better. Maybe an awesome GotG villain?

  • sailor monsoon

Tudyk should definitely be in the marvel universe.

  • Jooshua

I agree. Cooper is great, but I’d love to hear Tudyk’s take on it.

  • sailor monsoon

I’ve wanted walker as captain America since i saw the dirty dozen 20 years ago

  • sailor monsoon

Before Bradley cooper was announced as rocket, i bet hard money tudyck was going to get it

  • Jooshua

That would’ve been so DOPE!! Throw in some James Spader as Harry Osborn, and could John Cusack play young Tony Stark?

Then of course.. Vincent D’Onofrio as Thor..
    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f40f245b474a9953cffb05938b53090f4da69d8f8693a7133fef7a00aa9bbccd.jpg

  • Jooshua

Early 2000s Batman Beyond starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Terry McGinnis. If Tim Burton would direct, they could bring back Keaton as Batman. Or possibly Harrison Ford or Robert Redford as Batman directed by the Wachowskis or Robert Rodriguez.

I’d also like to see Aronofsky’s crazy version with John Goodman as Alfred, or as he was called “Big Al”. I’d also want to see Jensen Ackles as Batman, with Thandie Newton as Catwoman.

Let’s see.. Early 2000s Guardians of the Galaxy with Seann William Scott or Nathan Fillion as Star-Lord, The Rock as Drax, Jessica Alba or Rosario Dawson as Gamora, Alan Tudyk as Rocket Raccoon, then still throw in Vin Diesel as Groot. Neil McDonough as The Collector, Charlize Theron or Morena Baccarin as Nebula. Directed by Joss Whedon.

John Hughes’ Spider-Man – Andrew McCarthy or John Cusack as Peter Parker, Molly Ringwald as Mary Jane Watson, James Spader as Harry Osborn, Ally Sheedy as Betty Brant, Demi Moore as Felicia Hardy, Emilio Estevez as Flash Thompson, Paul Gleason as J. Jonah Jameson, Harry Dean Stanton as Uncle Ben, Angela Lansbury or Shirley MacLaine as Aunt May, Michael Douglas as Norman Osborn, Bob Hoskins as Doc Ock, Kurt Russell as Sandman, David Bowie as Chameleon.

  • DryButSoupy

That Silver Surfer image looks like Dr. Manhattan and an Engineer from Prometheus had a kid.

  • DryButSoupy

    The Invaders…filmed circa late 60’s-70’s

    Robert Redford as Captain America
    Anson Williams as Bucky
    John Cassavetes as Namor
    Keir Dullea as Human Torch
    Young Mark Hamill as Toro
with Lee Marvin as Sgt. Nick Fury

Directed by Brian G. Hutton of Where Eagles Dare and Kelly’s Heroes fame.

  • Duke

    I’d watch that.

  • sailor monsoon

He’s a great pick But i think his fame is too distracting

  • Lydia Deetz
  • sailor monsoon

I love beatty but i can see him as luthor more.
A charming villain that would smile as he stabs you

  • Lydia Deetz

I think Beatty would be an awesome Superman. Imagine a universe where Batman Returns ends with Bats standing on a building near a blazing Bat Signal across the sky, then as the movie is about to end… The signal is obscured by huge familiar red cape, Beatty descends from the sky in a classic era Superman suit landing next to Bats. His hand extends out, revealing a JLA ring then… Credits.

  • sailor monsoon

I know he would never do it but i kinda want to see him play a villain

  • sailor monsoon

I can understand that but late 80’s Baldwin was on fire

  • Duke

True dat. And Homeward Bound. But I’m talking about 2010 onwards. His most recent voice work is that ARCHIE robot dog movie.

  • sailor monsoon

And i know if there was an X-Men film made in the 80’s, it would’ve be 100% faithful.
They would change some shit and I’m fine with that

  • Duke

I can’t stand Alec Baldwin. He’s fine sometimes but other times I can’t watch anything he does.

His SNL schtick is getting old too. All I really watch is M:I with him in it and that’s because he’s there not because I want to watch it

  • sailor monsoon

His ideas were crazy to say the least

  • Lydia Deetz

That would work, I retract the above comment. Because I just envisioned Beatty as a Earth 2 style Superman, complete with silver streaks in his hair and a costume hearkening back to the Fleischer cartoons.

  • sailor monsoon

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/60dae40cd81cc3a93ca702515d42501766206b8be76be1a412919693c8f40eb6.jpg
I’m not going to stop pitching clint walker for shit till he starts getting shit

  • Duke

    Even more intriguing.

  • sailor monsoon

I would just have the X-Men be an old WW2 team lead by wolverine and Captain America and then they have to come back and recruit a new team.
You’d lose the king/malcolm x connection but it would still be about race

  • Lydia Deetz

Did I say Warren Beatty as Xavier? Scrap that and make him Superman alongside Keaton’s Batman.

  • sailor monsoon

Just remember that is his reworked Beverly hills cop script

  • sailor monsoon

I still think Baldwin would’ve been a better Batman them keaton.
    And i really love keaton

  • Lydia Deetz

I like your pitch but we would need at least a cameo of Warren Beatty as Xavier.

  • sailor monsoon

Disney did use him for Atlantis

  • Duke

Really wish Pixar would scoop him up or Disney Animation.

Back in 2013, I wanted MJF to play a SHIELD agent on AoS since I know Clark Gregg and him are buddies. 4 years later I’m still wishing for it.

  • sailor monsoon
  • sailor monsoon

I think the best we can hope for is voice over work at this point

  • sailor monsoon

    Very true.
Jodorowsky could’ve just reworked his dune script as a Silver Surfer script and it would make just as much sense

  • Duke

Considering he’d still be doing Family Ties as well, I’d say so. But damn do I really want there to be more prime MJF movies. Im hoping he’ll be the next 80’s actor to have a 2010s comeback after Kurt Russel.

  • Duke

Cobra is on my bucket list of 80’s movies to watch/own

  • Duke

Stallon as Punisher. Now that would have been badass.

Fuck no to Alec Baldwin as Bruce. Fuck yes to Dylan O’Brien as Terry.

Really wanted to see that Clint Eastwood Old Man Bruce film.

  • Lydia Deetz

If he can handle Phantom Of The Paradise, he can handle a rock opera about a silver skinned, ken doll-esque messenger.

  • Lydia Deetz

    *Starts To Sing*

    Xavier!
Tell your X-Men not to walk my way.
Tell your X-Men not to hear my words.
    What they mean.
    What they say.
    Xavier…

    XAVIER!
Yeah, can you keep them in the mansion for life?
Can you hide them from the Sentinel filled world?
    Oh, Xavier…

    MAGNETO!
I’m gonna take your Brotherhood out tonight,
I’m gonna show them my world.
    Oh, Magneto…

  • sailor monsoon

De Palma as director is interesting.
I don’t remember Hitchcock directing a space opera for him to rip off

  • sailor monsoon

    Absolutely.
    Cyclops is kinda lame.
    I love him but he’s a square.
Russell is the only actor that would make me not count down the seconds till we got eastwood back on the screen

  • sailor monsoon

There was also a time where glen danzig almost played wolverine

  • DontBeMeanInternet

Lee Marvin. Nice. But Russel as Cyclops?

  • Lydia Deetz

    My dream casting?

    Lance Henriksen as Silver Surfer.

    Orson Welles as Galactus

    Brian De Palma as Director

  • Lydia Deetz

I would love to see that unmade Silver Surfer movie, they even had Paul McCartney in the running for the soundtrack!

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/d81c7e6043e501554339aa9b9aaee84577bdddc7a0c063641480fe3e1a2ee06c.png

“We’re going to make an epic picture on the scope of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY with the kind of soundtrack that that film had, only using contemporary rock and roll. It’s even conceivable that the Surfer might have a chant or a fanfare made up of one thousand electric guitars…doing the Silver Surfer has always been a dream of mine, and now it’s going to be realized.” – Lee Kramer, would-be SILVER SURFER producer.

I wish with all my heart this f*cking happened.

  • Lydia Deetz

I read that in an old Wizard magazine.

  • Indianamcclain

I heard that Bob Hoskins was supposed to play Wolverine in an early X-Men film. That would’ve interesting.

  • sailor monsoon

I think cobra was the closest we got to punisher Stallone

  • Stallone should have played The Punisher. Stallone directing also. I still want a Wachowski Flash.

  • sailor monsoon

That work schedule would kill him!

  • TheDeadFellow

I’d love for a Punisher movie with Thomas Jane back adapting The Slavers arc from the MAX comics. I’m not sure who’d I cast for the principal players but for someone in the director’s chair, Jeremy Saulnier of Green Room and Blue Ruin fame. Saulnier is excellent at depicting the reality and consequences of violence and to see him take on a character like Frank would make for devastating viewing.

  • Duke

Okay hey now let’s not get too hasty. Here’s my MJF filmography:
    ’85: BTTF and Teen Wolf
    ’86: Spider-Man
    ’87: Secret of My Success
    ’88: Spider-Man 2
    ’89: BTTF Part II

  • sailor monsoon

Well technically mystique could be anyone…
I like tom cruise as Dr Strange and i want to live in a universe where Michael j fox was Spider-Man.
So much so, that i would give up the back to the future trilogy

  • Duke

Nice X-Men lineup but why gender swap Mystique? Great cast choices for the first 3 btw too.

Robert Zemeckis directs a Spielberg-produced Spider-Man film starring Michael J. Fox in 1987. That same year Bob Gale’s Doctor Strange film would have been made starring Tom Cruise (young hotshot Stephen Strange). The MCU begins 30 years early. Da da daaaaaa!
