First Look & Synopsis for ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ (UPDATED with More Pics)

Entertainment Weekly shares the first look at Jean Grey inhabited with the Phoenix force. Additionally, they revealed plot details for the upcoming film.

Synopsis: Set in 1992, about 10 years after the events of last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix opens with the X-Men, including Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters), in a new, unexpected role: national heroes. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) even lands on the cover of Time magazine. But his growing ego puts the team at risk.

After they’re dispatched to space for a rescue mission, a solar flare hits the X-Jet and the surge of energy ignites a malevolent, power-hungry new force within Jean (Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner)— the Phoenix.

I’m not too thrilled with them jumping another ten years into the future (or past in our case). Also, I’ve never really thought of Professor X as having a huge ego, which this prequel series seems content on him having.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits theaters November 2, 2018.

What do you think of the first details for Dark Phoenix?

  • Larry Version 3

Yeah when fan theories are the biggest source of information I just say it was a fuck up on the writer’s part lol. But it was hardly the worst thing wrong with the film.
And yeah Flash does have that cheat

  • Larry Version 3

The technology was truly ahead of its time.

  • Sailor Monsoon

But fincher and bay were extremely successful commercial/music video directors before they made the jump to feature films.
Kinberg has no previous directorial work to point to.
I guarantee this will be the hottest of garbage and will kill the franchise dead

  • The story is garbage but the cast is fun. That alone is enough.

  • Indianamcclain

I know. But these images have me optimistic.

David Fincher could’ve broken that rule if Fox hadn’t interfered on Alien 3. However, I still think Bad Boys is among Michael Bay’s best films and that was a directorial debut.

  • Tanis11

I cannot think of many. Batman Forever and Batman and Robin might be close but I would still say SS is worse. The original DD, Green Lantern? I haven’t seen these though.

  • Tanis11

Haha, that is the only one that would even come close and it was my favorite until Logan. But they are very different movies.

  • Sailor Monsoon

    Rule number 1
Do not give your multi million dollar film to a first time director.
    It never works.

  • Indianamcclain
  • King Alvarez
  • Everything’s fake. It’s a film about mutants 😛

  • Sailor Monsoon

I have no faith in this film

  • Sailor Monsoon

    Yes sir

  • King Alvarez

The Apocalypse scene definitely has greater stakes and he gets to have more fun with it, but it all looks very fake. I still think I like the DOFP scene better.

  • Both Scenes are on YouTube.

  • King Alvarez

Right. I’ll need to watch that scene again, I don’t know if I could sit through the whole movie again though.

  • DryButSoupy

I dunno man. I’m sure there are if you count made for tv movies from the seventies and the old serials. But SS squad, and this is just my opinion submitted respectfully, was not only bad but also boring. The first time I gave it a shot I literally fell asleep.

  • There are WAY worse superhero films.

  • Kemosabe 🦇

I was going to type out something (probably Winter Soldier) but I stopped and said “this guy’s right.”

  • Kemosabe 🦇

    Fucking legit.

  • Indianamcclain

There’s no way this’ll be worse than X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

  • Indianamcclain

    Same here

  • Indianamcclain

The hair is different, and the color of the makeup is lighter than previous films.

  • Indianamcclain

    I dug it

  • Indianamcclain

I think that’s what New Mutants, and X-Force are supposed to be. If Disney really does get their hands of Fox X-Men is definitely getting rebooted, there’s no doubt in my mind about that.

  • Plus mother! bombed. Maybe her star is fading.

  • Is there much overlap between the YA crowd and the x-Men crowd though? Also, isn’t YA dead now anyways?
I don’t know, I’d like some statistics on that, because given the general negative reaction to her role in Apocalypse (and even DoFP already) and that movie’s disappointing box-office, at first glance it seems that she isn’t that important…

  • It isn’t really even a movie. Just a bunch of scenes stitched together with ill-fitting pop music.

  • I guess she’s still a draw, at least for the YA crowd that ate up the Hunger Games movies.

  • Fuck her. Seriously, she has been bringing the franchise down for a while, and I don’t get why Fox doesn’t just replace her, seeing as it would be so easy and effortless to do that with the Mystique character, lol, they wouldn’t even need to explain anything!

Also, compared to her probably enormous salary, does she really bring that many more people to the theater? Is it even worth it for the studio?

  • “I kind of f—ed myself,” Lawrence says. “Because when I was trying to talk Simon into directing, he said something like, ‘If I direct it, you have to do it,’ and I was like, ‘Of course! Duh!’ Then they offered me the movie, and I was like, ‘Goddammit!’” But she adds, “It was the fan base, though, too — the other reason was for the fans.”

And the money. Lots and lots of money.

  • I’m enclined to agree, but they’re very different beasts, you can’t really compare The Avengers or any MCU or X-Men film to Logan…

  • Tanis11

    “Suicide Squad 5/10”

Sir…you must be a saint…because that is WAY to generous.

  • Eh… The novelty was gone by that point, plus it was ruined by jarring tonal discrepancies: that whole scene of him having fun saving people is done on top of a dead exploding student, lol

  • Tanis11

    What Marvel film touches Logan?

  • Watch order (with personal score):
    1. Logan 10/10
    2. Apocalypse 6/10
    3. Suicide Squad 5/10

  • That’s the main clause we all knew about. This one about selling the rights is a newer one we’re just finding out about.

It’s also the reason we got ASM in 2012. Spidey is locked into a five year clause

  • Raiden

The clause in the contract when Marvel sold the X-Men rights to DIsney was that they have to have a movie with an X-Men/Fantastic Four character in production at least once every seven years. Otherwise the rights to the specific franchise you failed to make a movie about revert to Marvel, like they did when a production schedule error made the rights to Daredevil, Electra, and Kingpin revert.

  • Killsqu4d

Wow a lot have told me the same

  • It doesn’t matter who they sell to bc apparently marvel made a clause where the film rights aren’t transferable. So if Comcast or Sony bought them out the marvel rights would revert back to Disney. Might as well sell them to Disney for money.

Also, apparently Fox might sell different branches to other studios. Blue Sky for example, since Disney won’t do anything with it.

  • Raiden

I figured Fox would rather cut nose to spite face than let a potential rival get the rights to their properties back.

  • DryButSoupy
  • DryButSoupy

I tried to watch SS once it started coming on TV. I wasn’t going to pay to see it. I couldn’t get far. Damn near unwatchable imho.

  • Doesn’t she look the same?

  • Apparently it’ll take a year for all the deals to go through so the 2018 films will remain untouched. After that it’s a mystery. Personally, I think Feige will take the F4 characters first to incorporate them. Doom, Galactus, Kang. Lots of potential. I’d maybe redevelop that Multiple Man movie with Franco to fit in the MCU. Maybe even Gambit. I’d leave the core X-Men for a bit of a cool down. I mean Marvel has 20 films already planned so I bet the first few years would remain untouched.

As for Deadpool, I’m almost wondering if Marvel and Sony would work out a deal that would allow Sony to release a Deadpool 3 film as part of their Marvel Universe (Venom cameo) in exchange for Marvel getting some rights or usage of characters Sony had films planned for (like Kraven, Black Cat, etc)

  • It just seems better than the kitchen one. He saves everyone when the school gets blown up.

  • Modified sound system? Idk.

  • Killsqu4d

I’ve heard both of those things haha

  • I can handwave stuff like that when the premise is already illogical. But I think I’ve read fan theories that he listens to altered music.

If it was Flash, I would say Speedforce. Speedforce explains everything.

  • Logan was great. SS was a huge disappointment.

  • Killsqu4d

    I’ve heard:

  • Killsqu4d

That’s a bold claim good sir

  • Killsqu4d

That’s a bold clam good sir

  • Raiden

So hows the Fox/Disney deal gonn affect this and the future ones?

    Personally? I’m excited.

  • Tanis11

Check Logan out. It’s easily the best Marvel film to date imo.

  • Sailor Monsoon

This looks terrible and i guarantee it’ll be the worst one yet

  • Sailor Monsoon

    Logan is legit

  • I agree about scrapping continuity for good films (regardless of my thoughts on Apocalypse). I just think the decade jumps are awkward and confusing, like they’re clearly trying to get to present day (but why?).

I didn’t know Logan broke the timeline, but I’m glad that movie kind of exists in a bubble. I hope Fox continues making some flicks that way, whether or not this merger happens.

  • Larry Version 3

Kill the X-Men franchise and just stick to the solo films. These X-Men movies always end up having horrible CGI and horrible writing to match while Fox seems to actually know what they’re doing with their stand alone films.

  • Larry Version 3

I really enjoyed the first hour where they built up the plot. And then it went straight from point A to point Z and things were blowing up for some reason and it was kind of a blur.

  • Larry Version 3

That Quicksilver scene was ruined by questions I had like, ‘If he’s travelling at super speed how come his music is still playing in a way he can hear it?’

  • TheDeadFellow

Huh. Wonder if it’s true or not. Guess only Kinberg can confirm. If so, I hope at least Par 1 feels complete.

  • Indianamcclain
  • Killsqu4d

    Or Logan. Or suicide squad

  • TheDeadFellow

It’s from Apocalypse. During the Climax, Jean unleashes the Phoenix in all of its glory.

  • TheDeadFellow

This is the first I’ve heard of it being a two parter. Where did you hear this?

  • Indianamcclain

I heard that this is supposed to be a two parter. If Disney really does acquire Fox do you think they’ll make part 2?

  • Lol @ that header image. Where is that from?

  • Yep, pretty much.

  • Same.

  • Indianamcclain

If it results in a good movie, then I could care less about continuity. Logan had some things that didn’t match up with the previous X-Men films but it doesn’t really matter.

  • I almost respect their IDGAF attitude about the timeline.

    Almost.

  • Indianamcclain

Most anticipated comic book film 2018 for me. I personally liked Apocalypse, but I’m hoping they can get back to making something on the level of DOFP.

  • Indianamcclain

I’m really digging Mystique’s new look as well. I like that the film seems to be embracing the comic book look even more than Apocalypse.

  • Sometimes I wonder if it’s trying too hard to top DoFP, but rewatching the scene several times on YouTube invalidates my argument.

  • King Alvarez

Was it? I barely remember it now.

  • Has the better Quicksilver scene tho imo

  • Kemosabe 🦇

Unfortunately so. I’m done with this iteration of the X-Men.

Give Jubilee something meaningful to do or pack it up!

  • Surprisingly divisive movie (at least on here). I thought it was pretty bland.

  • Killsqu4d

    Still haven’t seen apocalypse

  • Sorry to be a negative nancy, but Apocalypse really burnt me out (no pun intended).

  • – Third time’s the charm for Phoenix? (a storyline I honestly don’t care about)*
    – Will Mystique still be an unwanted “leader” with one obligatory makeup scene?
    – Could this be the final Singerverse X-Men?
(maybe after seeing what first-time director Kinberg has done, I might hope that’s the case)

    *As a non-comic reader

  • Joe Newman

This doesn’t make sense. She clearly already had the Phoenix Force in the last film. Also, it is not malevolent. It is manipulated into being turned evil. Oh well, at least there is finally space?

  • King Alvarez

    meh

  • Ugh, the non-hype is real for this one…
Can’t believe Lawrence is still in these, and that synopsis sounds just as bad and bland as the rest of the stuff we’ve been hearing

  • I’d expect a funeral since some of these characters got to be in their late fifties now.

  • Could only be improving it. I didn’t add much original thought.

  • TheDeadFellow

Nah, it’s yours. Some part of me feels like I’d be “sullying” it or something.

  • The Xmen cartoon adaptation of the Dark Phoenix Saga is the best!

  • By all means go in and edit the post to your liking.

  • TheDeadFellow

Dammit, I was going to do a post on this. Oh well.

Still, based on the photos I’m seeing, it honestly looks better than I thought it was going to be. Maybe Kinberg knows what he’s doing? I hope so. Also, I’m actually digging Mystique’s new look + Jessica Chastain playing a blonde shapeshifter.
