Now that timeline rumors regarding the placement of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 have been laid to rest with director James Gunn Tweeting that the next film in the subfranchise will take place after Avengers 3 and 4, the slow trickle of hints, winks and nudges from the social-media savvy director have started.
It wasn’t that long ago that hints about Kurt Russell as Peter Quill’s dad were starting to show up.
No. Vol. 3 will take place AFTER Avengers 3 & 4. https://t.co/5QCiH5fU55

Gunn confirmed that Volume 2 takes place in 2014 which is a mere few months after the events of Volume 1, at least according to this neat Wiki solely dedicated to getting the entire convoluted mess of MCU chronology straight.
Even more importantly, Gunn has already started working on the script for Volume 3. In this interview with USA Today, the director and the cast of Volume 2 speak to their experiences on set of the expansive space opera. From the source:
James Gunn has already started writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to complete his trilogy, discussing the story with Pratt and having “some pretty intense conversations” with Saldana about a significant role in the threequel. The only travels Gunn has on his docket in the near future, though, are relaxing ones to “get my head on straight after three years of waking up and going to sleep and thinking about a talking raccoon.
This comes ahead of confirmation that Volume 3 will be the last, an arc-ending sequel for the ensemble cast.
Vol. 3 will be the final part of the trilogy and conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians. https://t.co/NAg2ZR8RoU

But before the grand finale, there are a ton of in-film Easter eggs which imply what to expect in the third film. Not the least of which the credits scene that will likely introduce Adam Warlock to the MCU, but also this Tweet is particularly telling.
For some reason I'm just remembering now that as a kid my family's VCR had wood paneling. pic.twitter.com/Qdb8oH9mfA

So who is Quasar? One of the iterations of the character is that of Richard Rider, a human high school kid who is recruited into the Nova Corps. Seeing as Gunn has also suggested that Volume 3 may include Earth characters (other than Quill), this seems like a likely hint for what’s to come in the future.
Of course, other theories abound.
But really, I just want Rocket to meet a real raccoon.
