It Came from the Dollar Bin! – Justice League Europe Annual #1

Justice League Europe Annual #1 (November 1990)

Writers: Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis

Pencilers: Linda Medley

This issue features the return of the Global Guardians!

The Global Guardians, under the control of Queen Bee, are looking to bring their 3 missing members – Tuatara, Wild Huntsman, and Rising Sun back into the fold.  Dr Mist and the Global Guardians are sent to Paris to seek aid from Justice League Europe to help find their long lost teammates.

Will the JLE and Global Guardians be able to work together or will this team-up quickly dissolve into a slugfest for the ages?

Justice League International, featuring the talents of Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire, was a hit for DC Comics in the late 80s and early 90s.  The comedy and screwball nature of JLI brought us the BWHAHAHAHA team of Booster Gold and Blue Beetle and the iconic panel featuring Batman taking out Guy Gardner with one punch.

Eventually, the roster for JLI was so large that the teams were split into different groups, with Justice League Europe being one of them.

I picked this issue up out of the dollar bin because of the cover and annuals have more pages and a longer story for your money.

This issue was pretty funny with a couple of winks to the reader, especially the panel featuring Martian Manhunter and Blue Beetle.

Some characterizations, however, are pretty out of left field for me.

One example is Wally West as the Flash.

Wally is pretty much characterized as a buffoon, which is a head scratcher to me as he seemed to be growing more mature as the Flash in his ongoing series at the same time JLE was being published.

He does get a bit of redemption at the end of the annual, so that made me happy.

If you can find this in the dollar bin, I recommend picking it up.

Grade Solid B for Bwhahahaha
