Jac Schaeffer Hired to Write a ‘Black Widow’ Screenplay

Scarlett Johansson made her debut in the MCU as Black Widow way back in 2010’s Iron Man 2. In the following eight years, fans have been clamoring for a solo film centered on the super spy. Now it looks like things have taken a small step forward into making her solo outing a reality.

Variety reports that Kevin Feige has hired Jac Schaeffer (best known for the Black List script The Shower) to pen the script. Sources say Johansson had a hand in the hiring process.

A Black Widow solo film hasn’t officially been greenlight yet, but with the future of the MCU unknown post-Phase 3 this could finally be the chance for the spy. Although some are saying it’s eight years too late.

Johansson has appeared as the character in five films: Iron Man 2, Marvel’s The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War. She is set to reprise the role in Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled fourth Avengers film.

My pitch for a solo film would be a prequel. There is so much untapped potential. We got a glimpse of her backstory in Age of Ultron and it’s ripe for expansion. Plus her MCU history means we could have characters like Nick Fury, Hawkeye, Winter Soldier, and even Phil Coulson return. However, if they go the sequel (i.e., post-Phase 3) route who knows what the MCU world will look like after the Avengers (hopefully) defeat Thanos. Maybe there will be some badass spy stories to tell.

Are you excited that there is finally some development in a Black Widow film, or has Marvel got the ball rolling too late?
