Joachim Rønning Could Direct ‘Maleficent 2’ for Disney

According to Deadline, Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is in talks to direct the sequel to another Disney film; 2014’s Maleficent. Angelina Jolie is set to return as the titular character, with filming set to begin in the first quarter of 2018. Jez Butterworth and Linda Woolverton have been penning the latest iteration of the script.

Personally, I’m all for Disney remaking their animated classics into live-action/photo-realistic event films. It’s cool to see a film you’re familiar with in a new light. It’s also a nice change of pace to all the other sequels and remakes hitting the screens. At least here, they’re attempting something new while giving it that old Disney magic.

Now, I don’t think we need a sequel to Maleficent. Sure it did good at the box office, but so did Alice in Wonderland, and we all know how its sequel turned out. Is there enough story to support a sequel? Perhaps. Of course, I’d rather see Disney take a crack at adapting The Rescuers or Tarzan into their new live-action/photo-realistic universe. We all know how awesome those two mice would look in CGI!

Movies like Maleficent get sequels but Master and Commander never will…

  • 1 2 3 4

    destruction you mean.

  • Disney gonna Disney.

  • Manuel Orozco

Guess we won’t know until it happens

  • warpsix

So they plan on improving on the happy ending?

  • Manuel Orozco

    Ok then

  • Joe Newman

Well one was from 1977 and the other was from 1990′ They’re not really connected story-wise, so I don’t think it is too late.

  • Joe Newman

There was 23 years between the last two.

  • King Alvarez
  • King Alvarez

Totally. Subtracting his age from mine and I was already back in college for the second time!

  • Manuel Orozco

Those too but I didn’t see them

  • sailor monsoon

The new Winnie the Pooh was a continuation.
And fantasia 2000 was a sequel

  • Manuel Orozco

27 years too late for that. Besides Wreck It Ralph 2 will serve as Walt Disney Animation’s first big screen sequel since Rescuers Down Under!

  • Manuel Orozco

Don’t care for the director but I’m okay with this sequel happening. I really enjoyed Maleficent despite how different it was from the original Sleeping Beauty!

  • sailor monsoon

The pros definitely outweigh the cons but savor your last year of youth. And remember, you’ll never get a summer off ever again

  • sailor monsoon

    90 is the new 80
    And 80 is technically dead

  • Joshua Martyniouk

Adulthood is cool and scary at the same time!

  • 93 is technically considered a senior. Or an antique. (Literally took me a couple minutes to spell antique. Had to google it. Face palm)

  • sailor monsoon

    Jesus
Sometimes your comments make me feel really fucking old.
If i minused your age from my age, I’d still be considered an adult

  • I’m 37 and my brain is still 16. We’re talking about society definitions, kiddo : )

  • J-Mart, were just messing with ya. If you’re lucky you never lose the childlike part of you when you enter adulthood.

  • Joshua Martyniouk

I think a twist is better way to call this film.
    It’s to expand the universe!

  • Joshua Martyniouk

But your brain matures at 25!

  • That’s what I said at your age too 😢

  • Joshua Martyniouk

No, your considered an adult when you graduate college or around 21! I have 4 years of childhood left!

  • Well said.

  • Irrevenant

If there was ever a film that did not need a sequel it’s Maleficent. It already told its story – a deconstruction of Sleeping Beauty.

  • You’re considered an adult when you turn 18 and graduate. Enjoy your final year Josh!

  • I’ve seen the first one stone-cold sober and I don’t remember a thing about it.

She can have Malificent as long as they don’t cast her as The Bride of Frankenstein.

  • King Alvarez

I really never had much interest in this. But I guess it did well enough to warrant a sequel.

  • King Alvarez

    We all do 😛

  • Joshua Martyniouk

I have a long time til manhood! A long time Duke.

  • twstdbydsn

I’m going back to my corner to get baked.

  • Never try to understand J-Mart’s comments! You’ll save yourself a boatload of headaches! And he’s 17 now! He’s close enough to manhood now than he was at the wee age of 14 😛

  • Joshua Martyniouk

True I am still a kid and this movie is 3 years old
Im just happy that Disney is giving this film a sequel!
I hope it improves from the original film!

  • twstdbydsn

But you are a kid and that movie is only 3 years old!

  • Joshua Martyniouk

I loved Maleficent as a kid and think it’s ok nowadays. This movie made me burst into tears as a kid!
    But it has problems
They took Maleficent and made her good! Which was a nice twist! Also changed her sidekick to be a Dragon!
I think it’s ok Angelina Jolie is fantastic as Maleficent and the fight scenes are epic!
Im kind of excited and intrested for the sequel if they can improve from the first film and tell a fantastic story!
Im so glad they are making a sequel to this film! This and Enchanted deserve it!
This scene made me cry as a child because of the fantastic acting!

It’s an interesting twist on Sleeping Beauty and worth your time!

I can’t wait for the sequel!

Disney do not ruin this for me!

Let me be like when I was 14!

  • Joe Newman

I think they should just make a third animated Rescuers l. The two are so different and they could easily make a new one that is as well.
