According to Deadline, Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is in talks to direct the sequel to another Disney film; 2014’s Maleficent. Angelina Jolie is set to return as the titular character, with filming set to begin in the first quarter of 2018. Jez Butterworth and Linda Woolverton have been penning the latest iteration of the script.
Personally, I’m all for Disney remaking their animated classics into live-action/photo-realistic event films. It’s cool to see a film you’re familiar with in a new light. It’s also a nice change of pace to all the other sequels and remakes hitting the screens. At least here, they’re attempting something new while giving it that old Disney magic.
Now, I don’t think we need a sequel to Maleficent. Sure it did good at the box office, but so did Alice in Wonderland, and we all know how its sequel turned out. Is there enough story to support a sequel? Perhaps. Of course, I’d rather see Disney take a crack at adapting The Rescuers or Tarzan into their new live-action/photo-realistic universe. We all know how awesome those two mice would look in CGI!
