Let Them Fight! Niki Caro vs. Barbra Streisand

Welcome to “Let Them Fight!”, where we pit two directors with similar backgrounds against one another and let YOU, the commenters decide on who reigns supreme! For an overview of past fights and what’s coming up, click here .

What to Consider

Obviously, which director do you think is better than the other? But what film of theirs proves your point. Remember, it isn’t so much about which film made the most money or was a critical darling, but in your mind which director is better than the other in terms of style, risk, scope, etc.

How I Tally the Votes

I look at the comments posted (only first comments, no replies) to see who they picked. I don’t count comments that don’t give a clear answer on who they chose. If you want your comment to count make sure it is not a reply to someone else’s comment and has a clear definite winner.

Alright, FIGHT!

  • King Alvarez

She was in her mid 30’s, I was in my early to mid 20’s.

  • William Dhalgren

Yes, ma’am. I’m just throwing my vote behind her not being particularly attractive.

  • William Dhalgren

Our daughter has an old fashioned name. We named her after both our grandmothers.

  • Poppity 🎀

I forgot to mention also that I brought up Streisand’s other numerous and long-standing talents because you yourself referred to her talent as a “Hat Trick”. Her successful albeit limited directorial filmography is not a matter of luck. She had to fight the whole way.

  • Poppity 🎀

Watch one – or all – of Streisand’s movies.

  • One must remember to only take into consideration the directorial skills of said person! Y’all judging these people on producing and acting! Nien! Nien I say!

  • Poppity 🎀

Streisand has an incredible body of work as an actress and as a singer. Everyone knows that women have had a near impossible time breaking the glass ceiling when it comes to directing major motion pictures. To see that she co-wrote/starred/directed in 3 big production films is outstanding. They were all lauded and are excellent features. Of course, it is easy to deny this when one has not seen her work and will simply laugh her off as a “has been”. (Her directorial body of work would have indeed been larger had she not suffered from crippling anxiety.)
If Streisand had been a man, she’d still be going strong today and not been written off for retirement at 75. Eastwood is near 90 for God’s sake but no one questions him. I’m not a feminist but damn, that’s just wrong.

As for the Focker films, I’ve never heard of them referred to as classics but they did come after my time. This is where my age and appreciation of the finer things begins to show.

  • Spielberg has a body of work. Streisand has a good hat trick.

Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers are classics Pops! The less said about the third one the better!

  • Poppity 🎀

All the old-fashioned names are coming back into style.

  • Poppity 🎀

She had unconvential looks but she was quite beautiful. If anything, “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”. 🙂

  • Poppity 🎀

Argh, that be millennial talk, matey! The Focker films are garbage.
If your vote is indeed based on directorial skill, then Barbra would never be excluded considering that she has a body of work regardless of whether it is behind her or ahead of her in time.

  • Poppity 🎀
  • William Dhalgren

    Have to disagree there, Poppity.

  • William Dhalgren

    Jesus, how old was she?

  • William Dhalgren

I’ve never seen either of these director’s films. I vote for Michael Bay.

  • Joe Newman

I haven’t seen films directed by either, but I’m pretty sure I’d like the Niki Caro movies better.

  • King Alvarez

I believe she was really a Barbara, but never called herself that.

  • I love the Focker films Pops! It’s based on directorial skill! Caro is an up and comer! Barbra is basically retired!

  • Vincent Kane
  • Poppity 🎀

Was that her nickname or her real name? I ask because I knew girls named Bambi and Barbie in real life.

  • Poppity 🎀

I heard that the gastrointestinal flu was going around. You should get yourself some hot soup. 🙂

  • King Alvarez

I dated a chick named Babs for a hot minute.

    Barbra “Babs” Streisand

Yes, she simultaneously starred and directed 3 films but they were massive in terms of quality. She also co-wrote Yentl and won a Golden Globe for Best Director, the sole female to do so. All this plus she’s an incredible musician and a Best Actress Oscar winner. Damn, girl.

  • Vincent Kane

Niki Caro because fuck Barbra Streisand.

  • Poppity 🎀

You are just voting for her to get back at me for making you put Barbra on the list. Oh, Duke … bow to THE DIVA of divas! 😛

  • King Alvarez

I’ll go with Streisand because I know her movies. Never seen more than 5 minutes worth, but I know them.

  • Caro

  • Sailor Monsoon
