‘Maleficent’ Sequel Gains ‘Spectre’ Screenwriter Jez Butterworth

The Tracking Board reports that Disney have tapped Butterworth to take on scripting duties from Linda Woolverton who penned the 2014 live action Maleficent and drafted the initial script for Maleficent 2.

Coming from the perspective of the ‘wicked’ witch in Sleeping Beauty, the original film dipped into the well of fairy-tale lore and expanded the classic story into new territory; the experiment reaped good fiscal rewards for Disney, coming in as the fourth-highest grossing film of the year and spawned a trend towards adapting animated Disney classic films into live-action productions.

The news of Butterworth’s involvement seems to indicate a move forward for Maleficent 2 after several years of development Hell. The writer is also known for having penned the scripts of Edge of Tomorrow and Black Mass as well as co-created the upcoming Amazon series Brittania, which stars David Morrissey, Kelly Reilly and Mackenzie Crook.

Star Angelina Jolie is expected to reprise her role although further plot details are unknown at this time.
