Movie Casting Buffet: Danny Trejo, K.J. Apa, Ray Liotta, Zazie Beetz and More Join Upcoming Films

In Part 2 of Monday’s casting news (we covered TV earlier), we have casting updates for The Hate U Give, 3 From Hell, Cutman, Uncut Gems, Boss Level, Sweet Harmony, The Last Summer, Primal, The Torture Report, Against All Enemies, and Pale Blue Dots.

First, Deadline reports The Hate U Give has cast K.J. Apa (Riverdale) as Chris, the boyfriend of the film’s lead, replacing the previously fired Kian Lawley. He has dyed his hair brown for the role and is scheduled to participate in the week long set of reshoots. The film currently doesn’t have a release date.

Next, Danny Trejo is reprising his role of Rondo from 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects for Rob Zombie‘s upcoming 3 From Hell.

Continuing on, Deadline says Ray Liotta has been cast in indie film Cutman, which follows a “retired boxer who is dying of cancer and working also as an enforcer for various low-level mobsters. He is haunted by the death of his “cutman” and just wants to die in peace before he meets a junkie and her daughter as they all search for meaning and revenge.”

This next one is a tad old, but Adam Sandler will star in Uncut Gems for the Safdie brothers and A24, Deadline reports. He replaces the role vacated by Jonah Hill.

Fifthly, Ken Jeong and newcomer Mathilde Ollivier have boarded Boss Level. Jeong will play the owner of the restaurant, Chef Jake, and Ollivier will play Gabrielle, “a warm, friendly, sophisticated bartender at the Chronos Bar where Roy is a regular.” Other castmembers include Frank Grillo, Mel Gibson, and Naomi Watts.

Ksenio Solo

Ready for another bit of casting? Ksenia Solo (Lost Girl, Turn: Washington’s Spies) has been cast as the lead in Sweet Harmony, an indie psychological thriller from Kerry Douglas Dye that “takes place in a rent-controlled New York apartment building in a gentrifying neighborhood that has gone condo. Conflict arises between the newer upscale residents and one of the original tenants.” [Deadline]

The Fosters star Maia Mitchell (The Fosters, Teen Beach Movie) is set to play K.J. Apa’s love interest in The Last Summer, a young adult film that follows a “group of high school grads whose lives intersect in Chicago over the summer before they start college.” Mitchell will play Phoebe, a budding filmmaker in the midst of shooting a documentary about her peers. [Deadline]

Next, LaMonica Garrett (Designated Survivor) has joined the action indie Primal alongside Nicolas Cage, Famke Janssen, and Kevin Durand. Primal follows “a big-game hunter (Cage) who is shipping a white Jaguar (a million-dollar animal) from the Amazon back to the States aboard a freighter.” Garrett will player Ringer, head of a Special Operations Group of United States Marshals. A huge casting update for The Torture Report as Deadline reports Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum), writer and director of the upcoming film, currently has Annette Bening, Adam Driver, Jon Hamm, and Jennifer Morrison in talks for roles.

Zazie Beetz

Finally, Zazie Beetz (Atlanta, Deadpool 2) is currently in talks to star in two films: Kristen Stewart’s Against All Enemies and Natalie Portman’s Pale Blue Dot. In Against All Enemies, Stewart stars as “screen actress Jean Seberg who in the late ’60s finds herself the target of an FBI Cointelpro campaign.” Meanwhile, Pale Blue Dot stars Portman as an “astronaut who begins unraveling after returning to earth from a long mission in space.”

That’s it for your movie casting update. Which bit of casting news interests you the most?
