New ‘Red Sparrow’ trailer + poster

JLaw goes Red.

After letting a fireball loose on audiences last year with Darren Aronofsky’s mother!, Jennifer Lawrence returns to more conventional but probably not universal appeal with the spy thriller Red Sparrow, reuniting her with Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence based off the novel by ex-CIA operative Jason Matthews. First up, here’s the first official poster, showcasing a rather bold red styling and Lawrence’s face slight obfuscated:

And the trailer itself, provided by the UK division of Fox:

Here’s a synopsis:

Ballerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to ‘Sparrow School’ a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. But her first mission, targeting a CIA agent, threatens to unravel the security of both nations.
I keep flip flopping on this film and it’s frustrating. On one hand, it’s a female led R rated thriller written by the guy who did A Cure For Wellness (having Joel Edgeton in the cast isn’t a bad thing either) but on the other hand, some other marketing material I’ve seen seems to imply it’s yet another “THEY MADE HER A WEAPON. THEY’LL REGRET THAT” crap we had to deal with last year with Ghost In The Shell. Here’s hoping the former wins out more than the latter.
Red Sparrow comes out on the 2nd of March.

    I liked her in joy

I cannot confirm or deny anything about Mother because I haven’t seen it. Everything post Silver Linings that I have seen (which does not include Mother), lacks everything that I enjoyed about her before she became a star. And you are right about Passengers. Pratt appears to be on the same path.

    That he did

  • DryButSoupy

She was so good in mother that Danzig wrote a song about it.

  • Sailor Monsoon

She couldn’t be more real in mother!
She’s bad in blockbusters because her blockbusters are bad.
    Nobody was good in passengers
Nobody was memorable in hunger games but her performance in mother! was fearless

  • King Alvarez

I’ll wait til it hits FXNow.

Passengers should not get a pass. And there was 0 passion in the Hunger Games as well. Once she became a superstar and Hollywood took hold she lost all her ‘realness’ which was what made her so refreshing and appealing.

  • Sailor Monsoon

    I agree immensely
It’s a garbage franchise but he needs a hit

  • I feel like they were a waste of his time, but I know that’s unfair. I just really dislike that franchise.

  • Sailor Monsoon

Hunger Games bought him a couple more films

  • I’m slightly more interested knowing that Francis Lawrence is at the helm… Man, I wish we could’ve seen his career if Constantine was a bigger hit. I revisit that movie almost on a yearly basis.

I dunno man. Nothing that I’ve seen about that movie (trailers or reviews) speaks to me. “Pretentious” is the vibe I’m getting.

  • Starkiller1

I thought this was set in the Cold War for some reason. Is this modern day? They’re using Dell monitors.

  • Sailor Monsoon

She’s only bad in the X-Men films

  • TheDeadFellow

I’d say watch mother! if you want a reminder as to the fact she actually be good in movies.

  • DryButSoupy

    I think I’m over J-Law now.

  • Larry Version 3

Trying to get on board but it seems rather generic.

  • William Dhalgren

    Goddamn right.
