THR has revealed that Will Forte and Gina Rodriguez have joined the upcoming theatrical animated Scooby-Doo film. Additionally, Frank Welker will reprise his voice role as Scooby while Tracy Morgan has been cast as Captain Caveman (yeah, we’ll get to that in a moment).
Forte is the new voice for Shaggy and Rodriguez will voice Velma. That leaves Daphne as the remaining member of Mystery Incorporated left to be cast. While I’m interested to see these actors take on this iconic group, I’m a little peeved nobody told Matthew Lillard, who played the live-action Shaggy in the two 2000s films and has voiced the character since 2010, the news first.
Well this sucks.
What a crappy way to find out…. thanks Hollywood. You never sense to amaze me. https://t.co/QDdlMAqlrZ

Chris Columbus is on board as a creative producer with Tony Cervone as director. Matt Lieberman is penning the script. Plot details are unknown, but obviously this has the potential to set up a Hanna-Barbera universe since Morgan is going to voice Captain Caveman, who never appeared on any of the original Scooby-Doo incarnations. Instead, he was the star of Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels. He did however appear in a fever dream episode of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated (fan plug: it’s a great show).
Sources say that the studio wants to give the Scooby-Doo franchise as much as attention as its DC and Harry Potter properties. I’ll believe it when I see it.
What are your thoughts on the upcoming Scooby-Doo film? How do you think Warner Bros. will differentiate the project from the multiple direct-to-video animated features?
