I am the devil, and I am here to do the devil’s work.
Well this is a surprise. I think I had heard rumblings of a sequel to Mr. Zombie’s 2005 crime/horror/thriller, but here he is already in production.
I saw The Devil’s Rejects in the theater with my good friend BB Mike, and we loved it. While I had seen House of 1000 Corpses (the first film in this series), it didn’t leave much of an impression. The Devil’s Rejects elevated the material out of schlocky B-movie territory, and put Zombie on my radar.
It’s a visceral film, full of ugly subject matter, but with a ragtag, familial trio. They’re weirdly likable, despite being horrible people (hell, even Ebert enjoyed the film!). Unfortunately, Mike and I have since declared this a fluke, as Rob hasn’t made a great film since (I heard Lords of Salem was unwatchable, and I thought 31 was redundant trash).
Because of this, I’m wary of this movie. Plus, if you’ve seen The Devil’s Rejects, a sequel is a bit of a head-scratcher. However, the new title offers a hint. I wonder if this will be supernatural in any way. I’d love to see Zombie’s take on the underworld, instead of just slimy rednecks played by horror icons.
Anyone here excited for the return of the Firefly family? I’m curious to revisit The Devil’s Rejects, but fear it won’t hold up… At least you can’t go wrong with “Free Bird.”
