Review – ‘Injustice vs Masters of the Universe’ #1

Superman and He- Man first crossed over in DC Comics Presents #47 in July 1982.  In 2013, DC Universe vs Masters of the Universe was released once again pitting the Man of Steel vs the Prince of Eternia. This week sees the release of Injustice vs Masters of the Universe #1 by Tim Seeley and Freddie E Williams II.

The story opens with Zodac flying through space giving the reader a glimpse of the events taking place on Eternia. He -Man has returned home to take on his evil doppelganger, Faker. Faker has been running the show after He-Man, Man-at- Arms, and Teela were trapped in the Dwell of Delusions. The trio were rescued by Moss Man.  After defeating Faker, He-Man is assaulted and jeered by the townspeople for his course of action. The townspeople tell He-Man that Faker has been doing a great job protecting the people and they were better off without He-Man.  He-Man believes the townspeople were under the rule of a dictator and he did what he did to ensure the freedom of every citizen. While this takes place, Zatanna and Swamp Thing look on and decide He-Man is the champion they need for their mission.

Prince Adam and Queen Marlena have a heart to heart conversation and Marlena tells Adam he did the right thing and should continue protecting the citizenry the way he has been since he became He-Man. As Marlena walks off, Adam is taken away by Swamp Thing.  They are joined by Zatanna, Cyborg, Green Arrow, Harley Quinn, Starfire and the leader of the group, Batman. Batman tells He-Man what is transpiring on Earth with Superman as High Councilor (told in a very good and informative flashback for those unfamiliar with the Injustice Universe).  After some deliberation He-Man, Teela, and Orko will travel to Earth to help Batman and company, while Cyborg, Starfire, and Swamp Thing will remain behind to help Man-at -Arms on Eternia.

I’m ending my review short because I don’t want to spoil what happens in the Injustice Universe. I played Injustice 2 with a friend of mine a few months ago and we played through the game but did not get the final cut scene that tells you what happens with the hero you played as that defeated Superman. When you find out who is helping Superman remain in power, your jaw will definitely drop! Also, the final page reveal of this issue will keep you locked and loaded for the next 5 issues of this miniseries.

Next issue – He-Man has come to his mother’s home-world to save it from a despotic ruler: Superman! As Batman plans an invasion of the Oracle to stop their suicide squads from terrorizing the populace, He-Man wanders an Earth city (in disguise) hoping to understand more of the difficulty they’ll face. Meanwhile, back on Eternia, Zatanna and Swamp Thing are horrified to discover that someone else from their universe has crossed over!
