Review – ‘Mystery in Madripoor’ #2

Recap – “When an attempt to steal Wolverine’s corpse went wrong, a closely held secret began to leak out: Logan’s body is missing. Psylocke, Kitty Pryde, Jubilee, Storm, Rogue, and Domino have banded together to track it down. Starting in Madripoor, their search led them straight into the hands of the Femme Fatales! Kitty, Domino and Jubilee were barely able to escape, leaving Psylocke, Rogue, and Storm in their clutches…….”

Jubilee, Kitty, and Domino are in the sewers of Lowtown, having escaped Viper and her squad.  Domino is badly hurt and in need of medical attention.  They head out to get Domino patched up and to formulate a plan on rescuing Psylocke, Rogue, and Storm.

Viper is surrounded by Mindblast (Danielle Forte. Psychic with newly enhanced abilities. Telekinesis. Telepathy. Mental Illusions), Knockout (Elizabeth Rawson. Superhuman strength and endurance.), and Snake Whip (Leann Foreman. Formerly “Whiplash” wields wrist- mounted metal cables. Skilled combatant”). The Femme Fatales want to celebrate their victory but Viper doesn’t want them to lose sight of their plan. A conversation between Viper and a mystery man over transmission gives the reader the reveal of Viper’s client: Soteira.

If the name sounds familiar- it’s because Soteira’s Kill Team is hard at work in Maybelle versus Daken, Sabretooth, and Deathstrike in Claws of a Killer.

Rogue and Storm are imprisoned for the moment alongside a surprising character: Magneto.

Meanwhile, Kitty Pryde nurses Domino’s wounds. The ladies can’t send an SOS to the Xavier Institute because outgoing broadcasts will be monitored. A suggestion is made to contact Tiger Tyger but she cannot be trusted since she last tried to kill Wolverine. Kitty tells her cohorts that they must “do what Patch would do”; after all, Madripoor is his city and to survive it, they must play by his rules.

After walking from Lowtown to Hightown and everywhere in between, the ladies head to a casino known to be connected to Viper.  There they see a mysterious man under the protection of Bloodlust. Jubilee causes a distraction, Kitty grabs the man, and Domino exacts revenge on Bloodlust.

The man reveals himself as Stenya Ubacowits, a mathematician hired to plot flight trajectories for a satellite. After Kitty threatens to phase him into a wall, he reveals he doesn’t know what the satellite is for but does tell the women where the satellite is being launched.

The issue ends with an update on the status of Psylocke, who may or may not be dead after Sapphire Styx fed on her soul essence in Issue #1.

The Hunt for Wolverine is starting to weave the 4 miniseries together as we see Soteira’s name dropped in this issue. How he/she plays an overall part in the hunt remains to be seen.  Magneto was captured by Viper and the Femme Fatales but was it for more than just to use his likeness to trap the X-Women? Who is the mystery man revealed on the final page of this issue? Questions abound and I hope answers are right around the corner.
