Starwarsnewsnet reports that a source inside Lucasfilm has provided information regarding the trilogy of Star wars films in development by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners of HBO’s hit Game of Thrones.
SWNN is careful to state that they have not confirmed this info with any other sources yet, but their contact assures them that they are “95% confident” in the accuracy of the information.
After offering proof that they have worked on previous Disney Star Wars films, the source stated that they have been approached about working on a Star Wars movie this autumn. “It is not the Rian Johnson trilogy, it is the Game of Thrones guys’ first movie, and it is set during the Old Republic…” Apparently Disney wants to “open up” the timeline and appeal to “a more Game of Thrones-style audience.”
So…Star Wars, but with tits and dragons?
The source went on to say that the timeline is set hundreds of years before the Skywalker saga. “Think almost Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings.” They added that art departments are currently in the design phase and the script is being finished. As mentioned before, filming is rumored to begin in the fall.
Starwarsnewsnet states that though they only have info from this one source at this point, their contact has been reliable in the past and has worked on all of the Disney produced Star Wars films.
If this is true, I like it. I think it will be good to get some distance from the Skywalker saga for a while. It has become divisive, to say the least. Even if you like the films, it’s hard not to look at these new saga entries as merely rehashing the old “Empire vs. Rebellion” conflict from the original trilogy. Ship and character design has largely aped or remixed Lucas’ look from the 70’s and 80’s. Something new and different could be just the shot in the arm the franchise needs.
