It’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 all over again!
Sony is feeling pretty confident in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as THR has revealed that Sony has tapped Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Voltron) to direct the sequel. David Callaham (The Expendables, Wonder Woman 1984, Zombieland 2) is writing.
They also have a female-led spin-off in development (most likely focusing on Spider-Gwen) with Lauren Montgomery (Voltron, Batman: Year One, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) in negotiations to direct. Bek Smith (Captain Marvel rewrites) is writing the script.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the minds behind Spider-Verse, are expected to be creatively involved, although nothing has been put in stone yet. Honestly, I think without Lord & Miller involved in some capacity the future of Spider-Verse will be called into question. Audiences are well aware that they are what made The Lego Movie work (look no further than The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie to prove this point), so having them back would be a huge score.
Do you think Sony should wait until Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opens in theaters on the 14th before they greenlight any sequels? Or is this film all but guaranteed to make all the coin?
For anyone who didn’t get my Amazing Spider-Man 2 reference at the top of the post, it’s a jab at Sony greenlighting Amazing Spider-Man 3, Amazing Spider-Man 4, The Sinister 6, Young Aunt May, and whatever else they did back in 2014 before The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opened and under performed.
