Sony Giving Everyone and the Kitchen Sink a Film; Multiple Spider-Manless Spinoffs Announced

Sony must have been pleased with the buzz for Venom because they are going full steam ahead on their Marvel Universe.

We have confirmation today that Silver & Black, set to focus on Silver Sable and Black Cat, has been nixed… in favor of individual solo films!

Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures, spoke to Variety and said:

“We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film,”

Gina Prince-Bythewood is expected to depart the project but remain producer for both films.

Also in development are films featuring Silk, a Korean-American super-heroine, and Jackpot, an older heroine, likely in her mid-forties. Morbius, set to star Jared Leto in the title role, is still in pre-production alongside films focusing on Nightwatch and Kraven the Hunter.

Panitch added:

“Spider-Man connects to a lot of the characters. There are villains, heroes, and antiheroes, and a lot are female characters, many of whom are bona fide, fully dimensionalized, and utterly unique. We feel there’s no reason the Marvel characters shouldn’t be able to embrace diversity,”

What do you think of the continued progress on Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC; as it is being called internally)? Are you excited or are you waiting for the day Disney buys Sony and gets to use these characters properly?
