Steven Caple Jr. Replaces Sylvester Stallone as ‘Creed 2’ Director

2017 truly is the year for director replacements. Just a week after Dexter Fletcher was hired to replace Bryan Singer on Bohemian Rhapsody, Variety is reporting that Steven Caple Jr. has been hired by MGM and Warner Bros. to direct Creed 2.

Apparently, the decision came from Sylvester Stallone himself, who decided not to direct the anticipated sequel as originally rumored. Stallone, and returning star Michael B. Jordan, handpicked Caple as director. Stallone is still credited with writing the screenplay alongside Cheo Hodari Coker.

MGM’s president Jonathon Glickman had this to say:

“We could not be more fortunate and excited for the collaboration of Steven, Sly, Michael and the producers, to build upon the success of ‘Creed.’ The combination of Steven’s talent and unique vision makes him the perfect director to continue the Rocky franchise’s storied lineage.”

While Steven Caple Jr. announced his excitement to direct Creed 2:

“It’s an honor to be a part of such an iconic franchise and to work with such great collaborators. Mike, Sly, and Tessa are extraordinarily talented and bring something special to today’s culture. I look forward to joining the family and continuing the precedent set by this franchise’s alumni of incredible filmmakers.”

Production on the sequel is set to begin in March in Philadelphia. Tessa Thompson will also be reprising her role as Bianca, alongside Jordan and Stallone.

Creed 2 is scheduled to hit theaters November 21, 2018.

And he’s really going to have to die in this one. He probably should have in the first one.

  • I thought the same thing.

I wonder if this is somehow related to the rape allegations that surfaced a few weeks ago…wanting to keep a lower profile and all that. Or maybe the studio doesn’t want to deal with it if the story blows up. Considering the stuff that’s come out about other Hollywood bigwigs, Stallone kind of dodged a bullet when this story didn’t go anywhere.

Not to mention the shit that went on with Lord and Miller regarding Solo.
