‘The Favourite’ Trailer: Stuffy Period Piece, Lanthimos-Style

From the director of The Lobster and Killing of A Sacred Deer.

Yorgos Lanthimos is what can best be described as one of our most peculiar voices in film this decade. His insistence of having all of his performers speaking like robots, preference for extremely wide angle lenses to give a feeling of claustrophobia, his dark even sometimes absurd sense of humor and deliberate use of pacing make him an interesting presence in the world of film today. And it looks like he might be giving us his most accessible work to date this year with The Favourite, his take on a historical period piece based off of the close relationship between Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) and Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz, returning from The Lobster). However, said relationship is threatened when Abigail Masham (Emma Stone), Sarah’s cousin, shows up and starts becoming the queen’s titular Favourite, resulting in a bitter feud between Churchill and Masham.

Check out the trailer and tell me if this doesn’t look weird at all:

The Favourite is scheduled to be released on November 23, 2018.
